This year we went to Wiltshire and collected 1 draw and 2 wins.

Friday 13th July - Keevil CC

Our Friday fixture against Keevil C.C. was set in the grounds of a C.16th manor house built from local stone.

A slightly 'sticky' wicket, but in a most gorgeous setting. Barford batted first and Nathan looked quite comfortable against Tadman (quickish) and colleagues. Wickets fell regularly. Messrs. White (pulled muscle in side) and Rhead (hamstring) ended their cricket playing here. Keevil were up against the very straight bowling of John Elson to begin with, but soon took a shine to Thommo and Mike Ireland who was very kindly standing in for a 'flu ridden Peter Romyn. Mr Elson returned to slow things down and collect his 5th wicket. The game closed with the right result and a visit to Keevil's sponsor The Tipsy Toad pub.

A beautiful venue which warrants a return visit sometime.

Saturday's match against Golden Fleece C.C. had to be resited due to a double booking. A rather bleak school playing field (no changing facilities) and strong wind made it chilly.

Saturday 14th July - Golden Fleece CC

Golden Fleece C. C. is based out of a pub in Shaw, near Melksham. On the Thursday, a team of touring Australians arrived for a game. We were rescheduled to a nearby school playing field with an artificial wicket adorned by copious quantities of goose droppings. The changing rooms were outside on the boundary, where one of the Golden Fleece's imported talents was soon on display for the ladies to observe and they filled their boots! Nathan was in great form, Knitters had an unlucky 'catch' given. Thommo was still pi**ed from the night before and Paul Johnstone scored his maiden 50 for Barford.

Sunday 15th July - Beanacre CC

On Sunday our game against Beanacre C.C. also fell foul of a double booking. The King Edward playing fields previously hosted Minor Counties matches and is a credit to the groundsmen involved.

We heard few complaints about The Methuen Arms Hotel. Wadsworth 6X was the staple diet of many folk. On Sunday evening a singer named Jane Kennaway, (Knitters has her number), entertained us, until a prolonged attack upon Mike Ireland's chest afforestation (don't ask) and Sandy 'John Travolta' Peirson deflected our attention from her.

Corsham could perhaps be described as lacking in its variety of pubs and restaurants. This might influence the location of hotel if we were to return to Wiltshire. That said, there is plenty to see and do in a very typically English countryside.

Highs and Lows

My own cricketing highlights were:

Paul Johnstone - maiden 50 vs. Golden Fleece on Saturday followed by his maiden 100 vs. Beanacre the next day.

Malcolm Hawkesford - maiden 100 vs. Beanacre on Sunday. Said afterwards it was better than sex - oh really? Probably as frequent!

Hawkesford Mins Balls Johnstone Mins Balls
1st 50 45 46 1st 50 82 73
2nd 50 41 41 2nd 50 38 44

Thanks to the Beanacre scorer for these stats. Opening stand of 192 is the highest ever for ANY wicket.

John Elson - 5 for 18 vs. Keevil.

Martyn Lilley - 2 blinding catches vs. Golden Fleece. Neither off his own bowling!

Some pictures.
